PROTON CAM– first look at the world’s smallest broadcast-quality camera

PROTON Camera Innovations recently announced PROTON CAM, which they are claiming is the world’s smallest broadcast-quality camera. I caught up with them at NAB 2024 to find out more.

PROTON CAM is tiny in size, measuring just 28mm x 28mm / 1.1″ x 1.1″ and it weighs just 24g / 0.85oz. According to the company, it incorporates market-leading specifications when compared to other comparable cameras on the market. From an image quality standpoint, it features a 1.18″ sensor with 12-bit sensor technology and advanced FPGA to deliver what is claimed to be unmatched high resolution and dynamic range. It can output up to 1080p 60fps in Rec.709 or Rec.2020.

The camera and lens offer a wide-angle view of up to 120° and better low-light performance, without any image distortion. The image from the camera looked pretty good, especially from a camera of this size.

The base ISO of the camera is just 200, but for the applications it will be used for, that should be enough. It can go up to 6400 ISO. At the booth on the show floor they were showing several of the cameras working under ambient lighting conditions.

The camera uses S-mount lenses and there are a variety of options you can attach to the camera.

PROTON CAM comes equipped with an integrated tally light and stereo audio functionality. This is handy where there is a need for synchronized audio capture. Most competing products on the market don’t have an integrated tally light or a stereo microphone.

The camera also has a longer battery life than comparable market offerings, but its lower power consumption also reduces heat generation, ensuring reliable operation even in challenging environments. It only draws 2.5W of power.

PROTON CAM could be used for drone cinematography where size, weight, and power consumption are critical factors. It can also be mounted on players and referees, or integrated into equipment, be that on-board cameras in motor racing or extreme sports, or nets and pitch-markers in tennis and football. These unusual and often unprecedented angles and perspectives enhance the overall viewing experience for audiences.

Live concerts, events, reality shows, TV, and film can also benefit from the compact size and capabilities of the PROTON.
