At IBC in Amsterdam, I caught up with Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki and asked him about Sigma’s foray into creating cinema lenses.
Sigma have been working on cinema lenses for the last few years, and by using their existing stills glass they have been able to keep the manufacturing costs down. Kazuto told me that Sigma saw a business opportunity after seeing so many video shooters using their lenses.
While there is no official pricing yet, Kazuto told me that he is still studying the market and that probably all the cinema lenses will be under $5000 US. I am hoping that the lenses will be closer to $3000, as $5000 may be too much for some shooters to justify.
Sigma is actively looking into expanding their cinema lens range, and we could see more focal lengths and new designs appear in the future.
