SmallHD announces 4K HDR Field Monitors with Cine & Vision Series

SmallHD has announced two new lines of 4K HDR field monitors which will be available in Q1 of 2020.

This explains the recent discounts on SmallHD’s production models like the 1703 and 1303!

SmallHD haven’t released any prices yet, but here are the details of what you can expect from the monitors when they ship later this year.

Key features

  • Up to 2000+ Zone Local Dimming
  • 1,000,000:1 HDR-ready Contrast
  • 100% DCI P3 Color

VISION series – 4K HDR Reference-Grade Field Monitor

The SmallHD Vision range prioritises colour accuracy and the company says it “represents the next evolution of on set display technology for HDR cinematography.”

Vision monitors feature high quality displays coupled with a sophisticated 2,000+ zone local dimming array, for dark blacks and true colours.

The Vision will be available in 13″, 17″ and 24″ models.

  • True HDR viewing with 1000000:1 contrast ratio
  • Proprietary 2000+ zone local dimming array
  • 114% DCI P3 Coverage
  • 4x independent 12G-SDI Inputs
  • Full suite of exposure tools for precise control of HDR cinematography

CINE series – 4K High Bright Field Monitor

The Cine range are rugged production monitors with high brightness, designed to allow true 4K monitoring in the field.

The Cine series use edge-lit LED panels with up to 2,500 nits of brightness. They can display 100% of the DCI P3 color gamut, and SmallHD say they “offer cinematographers a powerful toolset for dialing in 4K HDR content at a competitive price point.”

The Cine series monitors will be available in 13″, 17″ and 24″ sizes.

  • Daylight viewable with 1,000 & 2,500 nit panels
  • 100% DCI P3 wide color gamut
  • 13, 17, 24 inch models
  • 4x independent 12G-SDI inputs
  • Full suite of exposure tools for precise control of HDR cinematography

Ambient light sensors

Both the Vision and Cine ranges feature an ambient light sensor to help maintain a balance between battery life and visibility – when run at full brightness the new monitors will draw more power than their HD predecessors.

Apparently this will be less of an issue with the Vision range, as local dimming means the backlight is illuminated at differing levels throughout the picture depending on the relative brightness of what’s in the frame.

The monitors look to be competing against Atomos Neon series of monitors/recorders which are available in 17″, 24″, 31″ and 55″ – these are set to ship in November.
