Our NAB reports are done… but there’s more to come

Reported by features editor Mat Gallagher and site editor Dan Chung:

Our Technical Editor Matt Allard hosts a live show at the Teradek booth with Sony

The National Association of Broadcasters show is over for another year. Even though the show finished last Thursday it has taken us until now to complete the backlog of video reports we shot. We hope you’ve enjoyed the content as much as we’ve enjoyed creating it. Our team at the show have produced nearly 70 video reports, so their editing hands, camera-carrying shoulders, hard drives and hangovers need time to recover. We’ve seen some really interesting products and spoken to some truly inspiring people. If you missed any of the live discussions we were streaming from the Teradek stand, don’t worry, as we’ll be posting them up on the site over the next week for you to watch or re-watch at your leisure.

Next year we hope to be back, even bigger and better for NAB 2014. In the meantime though, Newshooter.com will continue to bring you news on the latest gear, updates of the biggest projects, as well as interviews and profiles of news shooters from across the globe who are creating some stunning films. The site can only be successful with your help though. So if you feel you have something you can contribute or you have a great new project you’re working on, please let us know.

We would also like to take to opportunity to thank our sponsors Teradek, Rode microphones and Kessler – without whom none of this would have been possible.

War reporter Tracey Shelton reaches target to replace her camera gear

Reported by Mat Gallagher:

indiegogo

As we reported back in March (see here), Tracey Shelton was in desperate need of replacing her aging camera equipment to continue to report from war-torn locations such as Aleppo. After reading the post, two Columbia J School grads, Mayeta Clark and Nick Stone, set up a crowd funding campaign to raise enough money to buy Tracey some decent kit. Her original budget was just $2000 so the group, who had never met Tracey, looked to raise another $5000 to provide a solid photo and video kit.

The great news is that, still with time to go, the target has been reached and Tracey has her new kit. Talking to us just hours before she headed back to Aleppo, Tracey added the following:

‘First, a HUGE thank you to everyone who donated. It was so overwhelming to see the response. Mayeta Clark, Nic Stone and Frederick Bernas had never even met me before starting the campaign and they worked so hard on this as I was rushing madly across the East coast trying to fulfil all of my commitments for a 2-week trip. I never would have started something like this for myself. I’ve always just made do with what I have. To see the generosity of everyone is incredible!

‘We surpassed the goal so with my savings of $2,000 added I managed to get everything in my option1 wish list including the Canon EOS 5D Mark III. I also picked up a LED light, new tripod and a 24-70mm L Mark 2 (second hand). This was quite expensive but it is lighter and so nice that I decided to splurge on this one and stay with my old 100-300mm zoom for now, as I really don’t use it that much. I plan to pick up a second hand 70-200 f4 at some point down the track.

‘In addition to the funds raised, Juan Hamparzumian sent me his 1D. He recently upgraded to the newer model and mailed it all the way from Mexico City to New York. This is possibly the most expensive chunk of equipment I have ever held in my life. I will be looking forward to using this in Aleppo where I have a home base to store extra gear.

Richard Scott sent me his old 50mm f/1.8 lens all the way from Canada, and Matthew Monroe of NastyClamps.com mailed a set of very handy camera/lighting/mic clamps to add to my kit.

‘I also need to mention Jason and Corey of CombatMedicalsystems.com who put us over the top with an incredible donation, as well as the 100 other donators. I wish I could mention them all by name but that would be going a little too far.

‘We still have another day to go and everything remaining goes to RISC – a training program for war reporters in battle field first aid. It is run free of charge and is a fantastic program. I’d love to raise enough to replace the funds they spent training me on this recent visit. I can’t tell you how valuable the course was. I would definitely encourage any war correspondent that hasn’t done it yet to apply.

A huge thanks to Newsshooter.com where all of this began and to everyone who gave advice on this blog. It was invaluable!’

NAB 2013: Cinevate Introduces Motion Control and Axis Jib

Reported by Jonah Kessel:

NAB 2013: Cinevate Adds Motion Control and Axis Jib to Lineup from Dan Chung on Vimeo.

From Thunder Bay, Canada, Cinevate talks to Jonah Kessel about some new toys to help with camera motion. Cinevate has released the Moco system, which can be used with their range of sliders and in conjunction with an upcoming 3-axis, motion controlled, Omni Head. The Moco can do timelapses for as long as a year (if you can figure out how to power it for that long) or more practically, comes with a 12 volt battery they say will run the dolly for up to 12 hours of continual use.

Cinevate also released the Axis Jib. The jib’s ‘innards are all encased in a well built and unique cylinder. This protects the parts of the jib as well as your fingers. For those of us who have ever had a finger pinched in a jib, this probably sounds very appealing.

Watch the video for a sneak peak of Cinevate’s soon-to-come 3-axis tilt and pan motorized head.

Interview shot by Rick Macomber and Chuck Fadely.

NAB2013: Devin Graham: “I do YouTube, full-time, for a living”

Reported by Jonah Kessel:

NAB 2013: Devin Graham: ‘I Do YouTube Full Time, For A Living’ from Dan Chung on Vimeo.

The NAB show is not only about interesting gear, but also about interesting people.

Today at the Glidecam booth, Chuck Fadely ran into YouTube überstar video producer Devin Graham. While his Facebook bio might be simple (“I’m a film maker!”) his success in the viral video world is not.

His collaboration with YouTube superstar musician Lindsey Stirling has resulted in hundreds of millions of views. All done with no production company, no record label, no recording studio, no crew.

At age 29, Graham has a huge following and his following has attracted enough advertisers that have made veteran video journalist Chuck Fadely say, “The world has changed.” Although most people won’t know Graham, advertisers have latched on to his popularity enough for him to earn a healthy living from it.

The grassroots filmmaker embodies the power of social media in an age where technology has been put into the hands of those who aspire to wield it.

Glidecam’s booth at NAB 2013 is back dropped with clips from Graham’s videos, including the video below featuring the Zelda theme song. The videos have all been shot with Canon DSLRs and Glidecam’s HD series stabilization system.

You can see Graham’s YouTube channel here.
