Filter company NiSi have announced their new NiSi Circular Polarizer for matte box trays that will come in two sizes: the NIC-4565-CPL (4 x 5.65 inches) and the NIC-66-CPL (6.6 x 6.6 inches). They are made out of high quality optical glass and Nitto polarizing film, and NiSi claims that the Circular Polarizer can effectively prevent reflections on the surface from non-metallic or polarized light.
NiSi Circular polarizer: handy effects with a waterproof coating
Circular polarisers are very handy for eliminating reflections, suppressing glare and improving colour saturation and colour tones in the sky. The filter tray has been designed with a filter clip dial that can turn the polarizer, so you can adjust the polarizer to an optimal spot.
The filters feature a double-sided waterproof coating, which allows them to be used even if it’s raining. According NiSi, once water hits the filter, the water will drop off and leave no trace on the polarizer. With the filter’s sides sealed, it can effectively prevent moisture from entering.
NiSi Circular Polarizer: combine with a linear polarizer for a DIY variable ND
If you combine a rotating circular polarizer such as this one from NiSi with a linear polarizer you can easily create a variable ND filter that is handy to use on cameras that don’t feature built in ND.
The new NiSi Circular Polarizer looks to be a good addition to your kit if you routinely shoot with a matte box. There is no indication of pricing or availability yet, although we hope to find out more at the NAB show next week.
