SmallHD releases new 7 and 17-inch monitors with Cinema Grade Colour

SmallHD has announced new 700 and 1700 Series monitors: the 702 OLED and the 1703-P3. The smaller 702 OLED is a wide colour gamut, slightly more sophisticated complement to the companies popular 702 Bright. It has a 7.7-inch OLED panel with Gorilla Glass and uses the same Pagebuilder OS interface that can be found on other smallHD monitors. The 702 OLED looks to be a nice option for use on camera, or as a directors/clients monitor.

Unfortunately despite the monitor having a wider colour gamut, the resolution of the screen is still limited to 1280×800. The screens brightness is also only 300nits which is far from ideal for using out in sunny conditions. The 702 OLED has one SDI in and one SDI out connector, as well as one HDMI in and one HDMI out. You can convert HDMI/SDI signals with cross conversion. It can be run off Canon LP-E6 style or Sony L style batteries.

Each 702 OLED monitor comes from SmallHD pre-calibrated. You can install your own 3D LUT calibration with advanced color management solutions like Light Illusion’s, LightSpace CMS, or SpectraCal’s CalMAN. Load any 3D LUT via SD card using SmallHD’s ColorFlow 3D LUT engine.

While this does look like a nice offering from smallHD, there is stiff competition from companies such as Atomos, whose Shogun and Ninja Flame monitor/recorders feature full 1920×1080 10bit HDR displays with 1500nits. A lot of shooters may well find the $1599US (rrp after 1st March) a hard pill to swallow.

SmallHD are offering a 702 OLED Early Adopter Bundle which comes with a DCA5 D-TAP power adapter, hardshell case, neoprene sleeve and 12″ SDI cable. This bundle can be pre-ordered for $1449US, unfortunately this deal is only available in the US and Canada. The normal price for the monitor only will be $1599US after March 1st.

The larger 17″ 1703-P3 is the companies first reference grade monitor. The monitor features true 10-bit color processing that delivers over a billion colors. It covers 100 percent of the DCI-P3 color space, features a 1500:1 contrast ratio and 179° viewing angle, along with SmallHD’s Pagebuilder OS and large toolset.

As the monitor offers true reference grade cinema color, covering 100% of the DCI-P3 color space, it looks to be a good lower cost solution for DIT’s on-set and for use in mastering material during the post production process.

The monitor features a IPS LCD display with full 1920×1080 resolution, but it is only limited to 450nits, which is considerably lower than the companies 1703 HDR monitor which has 1100nits.

Each 1703-P3 monitor comes pre-calibrated for DCI-P3 mastering, covering 100% DCI-P3 with a Delta E average of 0.5. Users can easily install their own 3D LUT calibration with advanced color management solutions like Light Illusion’s, LightSpace CMS, or SpectraCal’s CalMAN.

The monitor provides for one HDMI and two SDI inputs, as well as one HDMI and two SDI outputs. The operating system allows you to use on-screen tools like HD waveform, vectorscope, false color, focus peaking and 2x zebra bars simultaneously. A Dual View function allows the user to monitor two input sources at the same time with a side-by-side view.

The 1703-P3 has a bright 450-nit display that supports any LUT workflow through SmallHD’s ColorFlow 3D LUT Engine. This enables 3D LUT support, allowing previously created colorizing look-up tables to be used on-set. LUTS can be applied via the monitor’s full-size SD slot. This information can also be pushed downstream to other monitors. A LUT altered on-set with 3rd party software, such as LiveGrade, can be viewed on the monitor and/or downstream monitors, and uploaded to an SD card for reference in post.

The monitor housing is made out of milled aluminium, and is claimed to be built to withstand the demands of production sets. It also comes with numerous ¼-inch and 3/8-inch threaded mounting points, as well as a VESA mount and RapidRail accessory mounting system. The 1703-P3 can power wireless accessories like Teradek with built-in 2-pin LEMO auxiliary power. For truly wireless operation, it can be powered by optional V-mount and Gold-mount battery packs.

At under $4000US the 1703-P3 is considerably cheaper than reference monitors from companies such as Sony and Canon. It is, however, in direct competition with monitors such as the Flanders Scientific DM170, which retails for $3695US.

The 1703-P3 is now available for $3999US.
