Photokina 2016: Samyang show XEEN 16mm T2.6 prototype lens

At the Photokina show Samyang were showing a prototype of their recently announced XEEN 16mm T2.6 full frame cine lens. This is a brand new design it covers a full frame sensor. The body is very similar to the existing XEEN 14mm lens and it has cut outs in the front ring to ensure that there is no vignetting when used on a full frame camera.

The 16mm rounds out their XEEN lineup which now reaches from 14mm through to 135mm. Each lens is available in PL, EF, Nikon, MFT and Sony E mounts.

We had a brief hands on and were able to try the lens on a RED Epic, but sadly couldn’t record the results. What I can say is that the image looked very crisp with very little distortion in the corners of the frame, even though this was only a prototype. Out of focus areas were similar in rendition to other XEEN lenses and the new lens should be a good fit with the rest of the set.

We were told the lens would cost around 2200 Euro and be available in December this year.
