SmallHD have announced Studio editions of both the 17-inch and 24-inch daylight-viewable HDR field production monitors that they introduced just prior to NAB. The 1920x1080p LCD Studio monitors have the same durability, upgradeable software, and color accuracy as their production counterparts, but without the HDR and high brightness capabilities.

Both new monitors have 8-bit colour depth. The 17″ 1703 Studio Production Monitor puts out 300 nits of brightness, and the 24″ 2403 250 nits. While these brightness levels are significantly lower than the SmallHDR monitors, they don’t need to offer daylight viewability as they’re intended for indoor studio use. By not including the high bright display and HDR capability, SmallHD can make a more affordable display for those who don’t need features that are more suited to outdoor productions.

The monitors have two SDI and HDMI inputs and two SDI and HDMI outputs and can be powered via mains or camera batteries. Just like the SmallHDR monitors they have pixel zoom, anamorphic de-squeeze, frame guides, cross conversion, peaking, zebras and the ability to load up LUTs.

The 1703 and 2403 are priced at $2999 US and $3499 US respectively. The 1703 is around $500 US more than the popular Flanders Scientific CM171, which offers similar functionality, but with the added benefit of being a 10-bit display. Both SmallHD studio monitors will start shipping this month.

This from SmallHD:
“Daylight viewability is an incredibly convenient feature of our large HDR displays, but for those shooting in controlled lighting environments, the new 1703 and 2403 ‘Studio’ are perfect for the video village and ACs,” says Wes Phillips, SmallHD Co-Founder. “They feature the exact same build quality and software feature set, but don’t carry the same price tag of high brightness HDR displays.”

The “Pages” system of software presets will adapt to every professional’s needs and speed up shoot days by providing faster access to critical tools, improving on-the-fly focus, color and lighting decisions. The new Multi-View page provides simultaneous viewing of all 3 inputs, or multiple views of the same input with a different feature and/or LUT applied applied to each view. Each customizable page is just a single button press away.
