Zeiss today took the wraps off the third lens in their manual focus Loxia line for Sony’s E-mount cameras. The Loxia 21mm f2.8 is a wide lens that works both on full-frame and S35 sensors. It joins the 35mm f2 and 50mm f2 and shares the same look and feel. They are aimed at both stills and video shooters. The lens aperture can be de-clicked using a special Zeiss tool that comes with the lens. The front filter thread is a useful 52mm.

For a fast 21mm lens the design is extremely compact. This should make the Loxia 21 a popular choice for brushless gimbal and multi rotor use. It should even be small enough to fly easily on a grip style gimbal like the CameTV Single or Nebula 4000.

I really enjoy using the 35 and 50 Loxias and they have become even more useful for documentary work since the addition of in-body stabilisation on the a7R II and a7S II. The declicked iris is very handy, although due to the small size of the lens adjusting it can be fiddlier than on a full sized ZE or ZF lens. Hopefully Zeiss will continue to round out the Loxia range in the near future. A 28 or 25mm and a 85mm would be very welcome indeed.

The Loxia 21mm f2.8 is already available to pre-order on B+H for $1499 US.
