IBC 2015: Nisi ND filters

By technical editor Matt Allard:

At IBC in Amsterdam I stumbled across a filter company called Nisi. Like me, you may not be familiar with them, but they have been making ND filters for the last 10 years, but have only just started making filters specifically for cinema and video applications.

Nisi have recently been implementing some pretty impressive technology into their range of filters, that aims to try and set them apart from other manufacturers. Most filter manufacturers sandwich the film inside the glass, while Nisi puts the filter coatings on the outside of the glass. The filters are waterproof and feature oil and scratch-resistant coatings. Nisi claim that their filters have ultra low levels of colour shift compared to other brands.

From what I saw at their stand, the new Nisi filters seem to be very well made and, more importantly, look to offer very good performance at a low cost. Nisi has already been approached by one of the leading camera companies on the market and DP Ketch Rossi has put his name behind the brand.

The new range of filters is available in sizes including 4×4, 4×5.65 and 6×6″. A 4×5.65″ ND filter retails for around $180 US.

Newsshooter will be doing a full review on the Nisi filters and comparing them directly against one of the leading filters on the market.
