MTF launch Nikon G to EOS and improved PL to E-mount adapters

By site editor Dan Chung:

UK lens adapter specialists MTF services have recently launched the latest version of their PL to Sony E-mount mount adapter. It now comes with a set of shims that allow for perfect adjustment of flange distance to guarantee accurate focus markings and ensure infinity focus can be achieved.

The foot of the adapter has also been improved: a second tripod mounting screw hole should allow firm attachment to tripods without any fear of the lens and camera spinning or working loose. This is especially useful with Sony a7S rigs which may be mounted to support via the lens rather than the body because of its small size. The adapter has also had a slight cosmetic makeover and now comes in a kit with a nice metal PL front cap. The new style PL adapter is also available for other mounts including m4/3.

Another new item is their Nikon G lens to EOS adapter. This allows manual control of iris on Nikon G lenses which don’t have a physical aperture ring. A lever on the adapter couples with the aperture control lever of the lens and allows physical control without any electronics. The only downside is that you don’t know the exact f-stop you are shooting at unless you are wide open. It is especially useful for adapting the latest Nikon G glass to cameras like the C100, C300 and 5D mkIII.

The newer Nikon 20mm f1.8, 28mm f1.8, 50mm f1.4 and 85mm f1.8 lenses in particular make an interesting prime lens setup which is very sharp and yet compact. The MTF adapter is very similar to the Novoflex/16×9.net adapter I’ve used in the past. There are also several Chinese-made versions of a similar design, but if you want a beautifully made British alternative then the MTF looks like a good bet. Price is set at £110 + tax.

Also nearing release is the latest version of the Effect lens adapter which allows wireless control of focus for Canon EF lenses when used with a range of popular cameras including the Sony F5/55 and FS7. The Effect 3 also controls iris from the same handheld wireless control unit. We previously saw the prototype versions at the BVE in London and again at NAB.
