DJI today announced a new wireless thumb controller accessory for their popular Ronin brushless gimbal. It clamps to the top bar of the the gimbal and connects via 2.4GHz wireless to the Ronin. DJI claim it the ability to control gimbal pan and tilt smoothly will be enhanced by a pressure sensitive system in the controller pad. An intergrated OLED display tells you what your settings are and allows you to quickly change between stored profiles.

To power the remote there is a built in rechargeable battery which DJI say will last all day. You can even use the thumb remote simultaneously with the Ronin remote controller thanks to an external 2.4GHz receiver – this should mean the main gimbal operator can make take over instantly from a second operator because he/she needs to make a move that is better controlled directly.

I might have known DJI were about to launch a new thumb controller for the Ronin. Why? because I just bought a new third party Aerialpixels wired thumb joystick controller for my own Ronin and I haven’t even had a chance to test it out yet. It will be interesting to compare how well the two controllers stack up against each other given that one is wired and other wireless.

No price on the wireless controller has yet been announced but I imagine being from DJI it will be reasonable.
