Inter BEE 2014: Canon 50-1000mm Cine servo zoom first look

By technical editor Matt Allard:

At Inter BEE in Tokyo today Canon were showing there new 50-1000mm cine servo zoom lens that they announced in October. Not only does it feature a highly impressive 20x zoom but it also has a built-in 1.5x range extender taking the maximum focal length up to a whopping 1500mm. If you paired this lens on a Sony F5/55 and engaged the 2x centre crop mode (a HD crop from the centre of the 4K imager) you would be looking at something approaching 4500mm full-frame equivalent!

Aimed primarily at wildlife, sports and broadcast markets the 50-1000mm lens will be available in April next year. The lens is rather large but considering its range it weighs in at just 6.5kg which is much lighter than other large range cine zoom lenses.

One thing that isn’t on this lens is an image stabiliser – something that is a little odd considering that the primary use is outdoors where even the slightest wind may introduce shake into super telephoto shots.
