Canon Ambassador Christian Anderl takes the 7D mark II skydiving with the Redbull team

By site editor Dan Chung:

Canon’s 7D mark II might not be getting too much attention from filmmaking bloggers, but that hasn’t stopped Canon ambassador Christian Anderl from putting it to good use. He teamed up with skydive shooter Wolfgang Lienbacher to test out the Dual Pixel CMOS AF with face detection system during a jump with the Red Bull team. A pre-production 7D mark II and a Canon 24mm f1.4 lens (with variable ND filter attached) were set at f2.

Given that the camera was pretty much left to fend for itself, choosing where to focus and ISO automatically, the results are certainly impressive. It’s hard to see how it would be possible to get shallow depth of field shots in this situation using conventional focusing techniques. To me it justifies Canon’s continued development of better autofocus for video. At some point soon this kind of AF performance will be standard in cameras – which is no bad thing.
