Brushless gimbal price shock: B+H price DJI Ronin at $2999

By site editor Dan Chung:

In a move that will likely shock other brushless gimbal manufacturers B+H have priced the new DJI Ronin stabiliser at $2999 US (Update – DJI has just confirmed that this is an official price drop and the same price should be available from other US dealers). In the same 24 hours that saw Blackmagic Design slash the price of the Pocket Cinema Camera this is an equally surprising announcement. It was only a few weeks ago at Broadcast Asia that DJI were telling us that the retail price would be around $4499 US.

The Ronin is heavier than many competing brushless gimbals and competitors have been quick to point out that using it will fatigue your body quicker than lighter alternatives (although it’s payload capacity is high as a result). The firmware and software of the Ronin also remain untested by reviewers at this point but initial reaction at trade shows seems positive.

Major pluses for the Ronin include fast setup in the field, smartphone or tablet control app, a useful power breakout box system, integrated battery and a the ability to be used in inverted and ‘briefcase’ modes.

Time will tell if the Ronin is going to become a go-to production tool, but one thing this price reduction does make clear is that the whole brushless gimbal sector is about to get a lot more competitive.
