Seculine EVF – a Korean alternative to the Redrock Micro and Zacuto

Converge on Photokina – Seculine Electronic Viewfinder & LED Camera Light Review from James Stoneley on Vimeo.

With Redrock Micro and Zacuto announcing their upcoming Electronic View Finders (EVFs) for HDDSLR I was very interested to see a video this week from James Stonely of ConvergeEvents.co.uk. He was at Photokina 2010 in Cologne where he filmed a new EVF from Korean company Seculine. You may not have heard of this company but they have a pretty good track record of products in the photographic world and with EVFs they were arguably the first to ever make one for DSLR in the shape of the Zigview range for stills use. They also make a pretty good IR remote control which I have been using for ages to trigger the video on a 5DmkII from a pretty good range. What’s also interesting is I don’t think these guys are small fish, indeed I bought my Seculine remote control last year from Dixons at Heathrow airport so they obviously have access to big retailers.

Seculine were at NAB earlier in the year and I saw a prototype EVF they had on their stand, it was a working but only in standard definition, build quality was average and I didn’t give it any more thought.

Fast forward to September 2010 and things have changed. Their new EVF is basically a 800×480 resolution 3.2 inch monitor with an attachable loupe to create the EVF. The concept sounds pretty similar to that of Zacuto’s. It is available in two versions, one with a single HDMI in and the other with a HDMI loop through. James was also told the unit has peaking and saturation control, but there is no sign of false colour or a magnification function (which I would sorely miss).

What’s really interesting though is that James claims the company told him the unit is already shipping to the US, with a European distributor being sought.
